Ramy's Guide to Dubai and Africa

This December, my family and I took the trip of a lifetime to Dubai and South Africa. We rode ATVs through the Red Sand Desert, experienced a 5-day safari in Kruger National Park, and ended the trip with a fabulous New Year's Eve celebration in Capetown. Each moment with my family was so special and I will never forget it. See below for my guide to the perfect getaway to Dubai and South Africa!

To break up the long flight to South Africa, we decided to visit the amazing city of Dubai. While 44 hours is nearly enough time to see everything the city has to offer, we definitely came close.

Where to stay

Burj Al Arab — This is one of the tallest hotels in the world, located in the heart of Dubai. The service is incredible and the architecture is truly out of this world!

What to do

Rent ATVs in the Red Sand Desert — We used Safari Motorcycles Rental to get the full desert experience. My kids sand-boarded down the dunes and we got to see a stunning sunset.

Visit Burj Khalifa — The tallest skyscraper in the world (2,722 feet!)

Eat at At.Mosphere — Located on the 122nd floor of Burj Khalifa, the views and food are incredible!

ATVing through the Red Sand Desert in Dubai.

South Africa - Safari

After landing in Johannesburg, we made our way over to the Sabi Sabi Game Reserve in Kruger National Park. This is where the action begins!

Where to stay

Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge — There are a few different lodges and camps within the Sabi Sabi Game Reserve, but we loved staying at the Earth Lodge. The staff is wonderful and the rooms are beautiful. The Sabi Sabi Reserve takes you on a 5-day game tour, including a river boat cruise through Zimbabwe to Victoria Falls.

What to do

5 Day Safari — We visited Kruger National Park, Sabi Sabi Private Reserve, Tydon Safari Camp, and Sabi Sands Reserve. Throughout the entire safari, we saw so many beautiful animals: elephants, giraffes, buffalo, zebras, and even a leopard.

Visit a local Shangaan Village — It was incredible to experience African culture first hand in the local villages. We brought new school supplies (and candy!) for the kids, which they loved. I also met my first witch doctor which was such a cool experience.

Sunset Cruise through Zimbabwe — On the way back to Johannesburg, the Sabi Sabi Reserve took us on a riverboat sunset cruise through Zimbabwe. Such a great way to see more of South Africa!

Visit Victoria Falls — We stayed at the beautiful Victoria Falls for 2 days. It is one of the 7 natural wonders of the world, so this is definitely a must-see!

South Africa - Capetown

After a week of game watching, touring, and hiking, a little R&R was definitely needed. We arrived in Capetown just in time for New Year's Eve — party time!

Where to stay

The Silo Hotel — A wonderful hotel located directly on the V&A waterfront, The Silo has beautiful ocean views and great restaurants.

What to do

Wine tasting at Fairfiew Wine and Cheese — Delicious Chardonnay!

Go to Artscape Theater — The nightlife in Capetown is so lively, there is always something to do. We spontaneously went to see Rocky Horror Picture Show one night at the Artscape. Loved it!

Visit Boulders Beach Penguin Colony — This is the only place you can see African penguins on the continent.

Visit Muizenberg Beach — Surf lessons are a must! The kids loved it.

Visit V&A Waterfront — Wonderful area of shops, waterfront activities, and restaurants.

Victoria Falls.

Surf lessons at Muizenberg Beach.

Fun at V&A Waterfront in Capetown.

I loved every minute of this trip. Hopefully we'll be back soon!
