Tone up for Summer with Bob Harper
With the warm weather approaching, it’s time to set our health and fitness goals to ensure we look and feel our best this summer! We caught up with celebrity trainer and fitness guru, Bob Harper from NBC’s The Biggest Loser to get the best tips and tricks for perfecting your summer bod.
Tell us a bit about yourself and how you got started in the fitness world.
"I have been in the health and fitness world now for over 25 years. My fitness journey started in Nashville, TN, where I worked in a small gym that gave me a real taste for this profession. I realized that if I was going to make a career in the field I needed to move to Los Angeles. It was there that I got into teaching group fitness classes, which became a passion of mine. I also got into personal training which was exciting because I got to work on one person at a time and really help them to achieve their personal goals. I became known as a “celebrity fitness trainer” and worked with people like Ellen DeGeneres, Ben Stiller, and Gwyneth Paltrow. Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman and Julia Roberts would come to my classes. It wasn’t until I got the job on NBC’s The Biggest Loser, though, that I found my true calling. "
"BE HERE NOW. I try not to get caught up in the past or what the future has in store. I focus on today. What can I do to be a better person today. How can I help someone now."
When did wellness become a core part of your life, and ultimately, how did you come to the decision to make it your career?
"I’ve been in the health and fitness world for so long, and I have been very fortunate to be able to continue doing what I love to do. It has always been my career and matter how challenging it has been, it has been a perfect fit for me. I decided a long time ago to devote myself to this field and I have stayed on course."
Crazy schedules prevent us from getting in a full class most days. What are some fitness tips to keep the calories burning while we’re on the go?
"I think if weight loss is your goal then you must focus primarily on your diet. You always have the time to make the right choices when it’s time to eat. People have the misconceived idea that you get the body you want by going to the gym. That body starts in your kitchen."
It’s hard to eat healthy on a busy schedule. Can you take us through a typical day of meals and tell us any tricks to satisfy cravings?
"I actually don’t think it’s hard to eat healthy. The key is to plan ahead and stock your kitchen with all the things that are good for you. I keep an inner dialog with myself after I eat and remind myself how good I feel when I make good decisions whenever I eat out or eat at home. The only real “trick” to satisfy cravings is to make sure that you HYDRATE HYDRATE HYDRATE!!! I drink a ton of water every single day. The foods that I consume are mostly real and whole foods. I make it a daily practice to avoid highly processed foods. Those simple rules keep me looking and feeling good."
Favorite cheat day meals?
"Cheat DAY?! I don’t even know what that means! If I am gonna have a “cheat MEAL”, I am always gonna gravitate toward the savory instead of the sweet. I try to avoid sugar all the time. I would much rather have chips and salsa or a really good cheese plate!"
