Supporting Breast Cancer Awareness Month with Melissa Spohler

One in eight people will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. That's why every October, thousands of people and organizations participate in Breast Cancer Awareness Month to highlight the importance of research, education and awareness. To contribute to this important effort, we asked breast cancer survivor and Ramy's dear friend, Melissa Spohler, how we could get involved.

"When I was diagnosed with breast cancer, there was only one place I wanted to go: Mount Sinai's Dubin Breast Center. The state-of-the-art facility is designed to ensure the best possible experience for patients by offering a full range of leading-edge breast health services. Their extraordinary team of breast cancer experts provides the most advanced treatment techniques, as well as emerging therapies in clinical trial enrollments."

"From the receptionists and nurses to the surgeons and oncologists, I knew I was choosing a place that would take care of me. I am forever indebted to the Dubin Breast Center and am grateful to act as an advocate through my role on the advisory board."

With Melissa's personal experience and passion for Mount Sinai, we asked her to help us design an exclusive pink top where 30% of the proceeds benefit the Breast Cancer Research and Treatment at Mount Sinai.

"When a patient has to have a mastectomy, there is a period of time where lifting your arms to get dressed is uncomfortable. I immediately asked if we could design a top that would be comfortable for a woman to wear post-surgery. Something practical and fashionable - I knew if anyone could design a top to fit that description, it's Ramy Brook!"

The Denise Top will be available throughout the month of October at both Ramy Brook locations and www.ramybrook.com.

"My hope is that a breast cancer patient will put this top on and feel comfortable. They will be able to focus on regaining their confidence, and most importantly, their health."

While scientists have yet to find a way to prevent breast cancer, Melissa wants to stress the importance of staying on top of your health.

"It's so important to be proactive when it comes to your health. I know for many people mammograms are scary, but I can not stress the importance of yearly screenings! Do not take your health for granted, do not skip doctor's appointments, and do not use the excuse that you're too busy. Remember, knowledge is power, and it could save your life."
